Commuting by bus traditionally required more patience for middle schoolers as they waited for older students being dropped off first.

However, a sense of fairness endured with knowledge that their time for priority would arrive.

Recent changes have rearranged the ‘pecking order.’ Now, buses drop off middle schoolers at Sperreng first, while high schoolers must wait.

Printing quality terribly low

While it is not commonly known, Pilot has won several (even numerous) prestigious awards for quality of content and design. However, a consistently sighted problem, with the newsmagazine, is in-house printing. Every issue, the Pilot staff must call upon LHS’s Copy Center to produce all copies.

New graduation requirements for the Class of ‘10 is an adjustment from the previous years:

Four units of English, three units of science, social science, and math are some of the requirements that are higher for the Class of ‘10. Also, seven units of electives, plus an extra Health Class, and a Personal Financial Management course have been added.

Like bombs exploding daily, students are faced with graphic sexual images on television, in movies and in music. Students have become forced to either accept these messages as their own lifestyle, or ignore them.

Every student has to come to realize that sex is a realistic factor that is prominent in high school, but it is their own decision whether or not to do it. In a National Youth Risk Behavior survey in 2005 conducted by the Department of Health and Human Services, 46.8% of high school students have had sex.

Indeed, the French are here, delving into eye-opening and stimulating cultural exchanges, such as this past Monday’s downtown field trip.

Over 20 LHS students and their families have participated in the French Foreign Exchange program the past week (April 16-April 28). This first portion of the program consisted of French students visiting Americans.

While losing weight may make people feel better and give a sense of control, anorexia and bulimia are tragic disorders that consume and even kill teens.

This fatal addiction has become a national phenomenon; one percent of teens currently suffer from anorexia or bulimia. It may start with a few dropped pounds, but after many compliments, the need to lose more weight is often established. People idolize thinness, and teens will go to extremes to achieve this vision.

Never before has an LHS principal been selected as Principal of the Year. This changed, however, when Dr. Ronald Helms, head principal, was selected by the Missouri Assn. of Secondary School Principals (MASSP). LHS teachers have been awarded as "teacher of the year," but this is a first for a principal.

Approaching the ER, there’s a mad rush of people. Inside, the waiting room is filled with assorted illnesses and injuries. Patients are raced to back, but the rooms are all full. They are forced to sit in the replacement room, a mobile cot. It’s not long before their saving-grace appears to save the day. Looking around, doctors, nurses, patients, friends, and family flow in and out of rooms quickly.

"Daniel Stark is doing better. He’s keeping up with his stuff. I am so happy, I can’t stand it. I’m just glad to have him back," said Sylvia Heston, Special School District (SSD) teacher assistant.

Daniel, as previously reported in Pilot Issue 2, has a type of cancer called medulloblastoma, a malignant tumor in the central nervous system that is more common in males than females. This type of cancer affects the cerebellum, the part of the brain responsible for balance and other complex motor functions.

LHS’s production of the 1965 musical classic, The Sound of Music, opens in one week. The film was one of the most popular films of the ‘60s and won numerous awards. In The Sound of Music, Maria Rainer, played by Christy LaGrotta (12), is sent from her Austrian convent by Mother Abbess, Pyper Reynolds (12), to the challenging task of caring for the seven Von Trapp children.

When senior wrestlers graduate, they want to be remembered as a team that accomplished their goals. After having only two wrestlers medal at State last year, the team has come out this year trying to set records.
